A Full Moon Three Women and a Dinner Plate

INT. COPY ROOM OFFICE – DAY
William and Claire attempt to walk into the copy room with
their heads down, staring at the stack of paper they’re each
carrying. They accidentally get caught in the doorway.
WILLIAM
Sorry. That was my fault. You go
ahead. You, seem to be in a hurry.
CLAIRE
(Laughing)
Yeah. I guess I am. But who isn’t
in this office. You would think
that after working 40 hour weeks,
he could give us a break on a
Saturday, for crying out loud!
WILLIAM
I know. That’s exactly what I was
thinking when he called me in this
morning.
CLAIRE
He called you?
William answers Claire’s question as if he were answering a
questionnaire over the phone. He is stiff at first, until he
looks up and realizes to whom he is speaking.
WILLIAM
(Fumbling)
Yes…this morning. It was 4:30.
I…checked the time before I
answered.
CLAIRE
Yeah. He called me too. I just,
couldn’t believe it! It’s my
birthday you know?
WILLIAM
Happy birthday, Claire.
CLAIRE
(Questionably)
You…know my name? How did you…?
Claire places the several pieces of paper into the copy
machine and hits print. She stands back, away from William,
and begins looking him over.
WILLIAM
I uh…you’re Claire. Claire the
one that never gets a pink slip.
I’m in charge of handing out the
pink slips, and you’ve never gotten
one.
CLAIRE
I should hope not.
WILLIAM
Yeah. Me to. I mean, that would be
really awkward, placing a pink slip
in my own mail box. Lots of people
have come and gone around here but
you…yeah, you’ve been here for a
while. Maybe six years?
CLAIRE
It’s actually six years today.
Thanks.
WILLIAM
You were hired on your birthday?
That must have been a great gift.
CLAIRE
I didn’t think so at the time, but
yeah, now I’m glad they hired me. I
was, some what of a struggling
artist at the time.
Claire realizes what she came in the room to do, and goes
back to her task. William takes a moment to look down at his
papers, realizing there is more than one copy machine in the
room. He places the stack at the top and hits print, keeping
himself on his side of the room.
WILLIAM
So what do you have planned for
your birthday tonight? Big dinner,
with lots of friends and family.
Boyfriend?
CLAIRE
No…
WILLIAM
No to which?
CLAIRE
No, I don’t have plans. No family
or friends, that live here anyway.
2.
They’re all back in the Bay-Area
where I grew up.
William blurts out the words he wants to say before he has a
chance to change his mind.
WILLIAM
(Smiling)
Let me guess. The boyfriend stayed
too?
CLAIRE
(Shrugging)
Yeah. I suppose you could say that.
WILLIAM
I’m sorry. That was, inappropriate.
I didn’t mean for that to come out.
CLAIRE
No. It’s okay. It’s what you wanted
to say, so you said it. I am really
a firm believer in a person always
speaking their mind, even if it
hurts.
William’s voice turns strong.
WILLIAM
Okay then. What happened to the
boyfriend? Why didn’t he follow you
here?
William goes back to his normal tone.
CLAIRE
It’s mostly because of his job. He
was an artist as well. He was…a
painter who had a great set up with
an art gallery a couple of blocks
away from where we lived.
WILLIAM
And…you didn’t want to stay, you
said, because you were struggling?
CLAIRE
Yes. I was a writer. And…my
stories weren’t selling so…I
decided to get a real job.
WILLIAM
Really? What did you write? Or do
you still, write?
CLAIRE (CONT’D)
3.
CLAIRE
I haven’t in a while. When I did it
was mostly horror.
(Laughing)
Don’t ask me why. I can’t even
watch the previews for horror
movies.
WILLIAM
Wow. Horror? I would not have
pegged you with that pushpin.
It’s…it’s cool though.
William momentarily turns away to criticize himself, thinking
that what he said was lame.
CLAIRE
(Smiling)
A pushpin?
William raises his right arm to slick his hair back, pulling
at the longer bits towards the end. He places his other hand
in his pocket, not knowing what to do with it.
WILLIAM
Yeah. Sorry, about that. I don’t
know why that…uh, let me start
over.
There is a pause between the two of them
SOUND: Copy machines beep.
Both copy machines have finished.
WILLIAM (CONT’D)
I don’t believe we’ve met, other
than this abrupt, sort of, running
into each other a couple minutes
ago. My name’s William.
William hold out his hand to Claire. Claire takes it and
shakes firmly. They go back to standing apart, a little
closer than before.
CLAIRE
Nice to meet you William. My name
is Claire. I don’t think I’ve
noticed you before now.
WILLIAM
Story of my life.
4.
Claire laughs a little allowing herself to get closer to
William.
CLAIRE
So why William?
WILLIAM
William? Oh my name. It was my
mother’s thing. She liked the name
William, as in William the
conqueror. When I was younger she
said that if she named me after a
man who was strong I would grow up
to do the same.
CLAIRE
What did she want you to conquer?
WILLIAM
I don’t know. Women I guess. I
still don’t necessarily know how
that works exactly. But I have
often had this inner like alter-ego
self, named Jimmy, who really took
on that whole James Dean
confidence.
Claire laughs to herself, trying to hold it back in front of
William.
CLAIRE
Do you ever let him out?
WILLIAM
No, well, I try not to. I mean,
he’s a lot harder to handle, now
that I’m older.
(Pause)
I’m too afraid that if I let him
out, he might take over. Sort of
unpredictable.
CLAIRE
I see.
WILLIAM
So, why did your parents name you
Claire? If you don’t mind me
asking.
CLAIRE
They didn’t.
5.
WILLIAM
What do you mean?
CLAIRE
I mean. I changed my name. First it
was Natalie, then Julia, and now
Claire. You could say that I was
going through a phase, or phases.
WILLIAM
What was the first phase about?
CLAIRE
Well my mother named me Natalie
after the actress Natalie Wood.
She really liked her in West Side
Story; I don’t know why. My parents
were sort of Theatre Geeks though.
Claire watches Williams eyes as they shift about the room as
if he has become less interested. Claire raises her voice, in
order to regain his attention.
CLAIRE (CONT’D)
I’m…not…though. In case you
were wondering.
Claire smiles. William smiles in return, turning to face her
before he speaks.
WILLIAM
I, didn’t assume anything. I’m
guessing you just didn’t like the
name Natalie?
CLAIRE
Well as stupid as this sounds, no
one could ever say my name right
they kept calling me Natalia and
saying that it was far too
difficult to say my name correctly,
so I was mad for the first thirteen
years of my life until I went to
court and had it changed.
WILLIAM
And then?
Claire shrugs, glancing off to the right of the room,
fixating her eyes on the red light that was lit on William’s
copy machine.
6.
CLAIRE
Then I met this guy who was in love
with Julia Roberts, the actress,
and so I changed my name to Julia,
thinking that it would make him
like me.
WILLIAM
Did it work?
CLAIRE
No. I was sad, and, I cried for a
month after he started dating my
best friend who looked nothing like
Julia Roberts. And as you can
probably tell, I look nothing like
her either.
WILLIAM
That is true. But, not in a bad
way.
CLAIRE
Thanks. I think.
(Pause)
When I turned 25 I thought it was
time to get a grown up name.
Something that really represented
who I was as a person.
WILLIAM
So you, settled on Claire?
CLAIRE
Yeah, like Claire Danes, the
actress.
WILLIAM
I’m beginning to sense a pattern
here.
Claire laughs. William smiles. The two begin to fumble with
themselves, not knowing what to do with their hands as the
physical attraction between them begins to grow.
WILLIAM (CONT’D)
Speaking of patterns, your dress is
really interesting. Is that a
Mondrian representation?
CLAIRE
(Surprised)
You know your art.
7.
WILLIAM
It’s one of my favorites, actually.
I think its called Composition with
Red, Yellow, Blue, and Black.
CLAIRE
That’s right. I think it looks
better on a canvas though. The
colors are sort of a representation
of my life. The red represents the
anger as Natalie, the blue
represents sadness as Julia, and
the yellow as Claire.
WILLIAM
What does the yellow represent?
CLAIRE
Happiness.
WILLIAM
Are you happy, in your life right
now?
Claire steps closer to William, but he shyly steps away and
gathers his papers up in one hand.
CLAIRE
I guess…
(Pause)
But, to answer you’re earlier
question, we broke up when I moved
out six years ago, so…I’m single
now, and have been since. But who
has the time to go out. As you can
see the boss has me working around
the clock. Even on Saturdays.
William stops at the door and faces Claire.
WILLIAM
When would you have the time. I get
it. Okay.
CLAIRE
No. I mean. I’m free tonight.
I’m…not doing anything for my
birthday. I actually had planned to
work anyways, just in case some
random unattractive co-worker
decided he wanted to ask me out to
dinner it would be easy for me to
turn him down.
8.
WILLIAM
And, then he would have to
understand?
CLAIRE
Exactly. But…
WILLIAM
But what?
CLAIRE
I usually use that lame excuse when
I’m not attracted to the guy who
asks, which is usually the case.
WILLIAM
So…what would the case be now?
CLAIRE
I’m leaning towards attractive.
WILLIAM
I see.
CLAIRE
Yeah.
WILLIAM
That, sounds great. How about I
make you dinner? I am great cook.
You could swing by my place at
around 7-ish. I think I’ll be done
by then.
CLAIRE
Sure. You can just email me the
address. You know my email, right?
WILLIAM
I am ashamed to seem like a
stalker, but yes I do know it.
CLAIRE
Okay then. See you tonight.
WILLIAM
See you…Claire.
William walks out of the copy room, as quick as he can in
order to avoid lingering too long, and saying something
stupid. Claire watches him for a moment then gathers out her
things and walks out with her papers in hand.
9.
INT. WILLIAM’S KITCHEN – EVENING
JIMMY
What are you doing?
WILLIAM
Cooking.
JIMMY
For who?
WILLIAM
A woman I met in the office today.
JIMMY
But it’s Saturday.
WILLIAM
I know.
JIMMY
So you’re cooking for her?
WILLIAM
Yes. It’s, her birthday.
JIMMY
Really? Huh. Does she know what
your cooking tastes like?
WILLIAM
Of course not.
JIMMY
Thank God!
WILLIAM
Don’t do that. Don’t make fun of me
right now. I haven’t had a date in
a year, which in guy years is like
forever. So, could you do me a
favor and just stay out of the way
tonight? Please?
JIMMY
I’m not making any promises.
WILLIAM
Ugh. Can you just hand me that lid
over there. I have to let this corn
boil a little while longer.
William holds out his hand. When Jimmy doesn’t hand him the
lid William gets it himself and places it on top of the pot.
10.
He then walks to the other side of the kitchen to remove the
Pyrex plate of chicken from the oven.
JIMMY
Looks like you’re preparing a
feast.
WILLIAM
Stop. Just stop.
JIMMY
What? It’s a compliment. Really.
You must like this girl.
WILLIAM
Woman, she’s a woman. I’m not a kid
anymore.
JIMMY
Oh yeah that’s right. Well then why
do you still need your imaginary
friend.
WILLIAM
You’re not…
JIMMY
Not…? I’m not what?
WILLIAM
My friend.
JIMMY
Oh so you admit that I’m imaginary.
That’s good. It’s certainly a
start.
WILLIAM
Look can you just be nice. Try not
to say anything, and stay out of
sight. I wouldn’t want to scare her
away on the first date.
JIMMY
You really think she doesn’t have
one?
WILLIAM
One what?
JIMMY
An imaginary friend. Ooo…maybe
she has more than one.
11.
Maybe they’re pretty. Wait. Is she
pretty. What’s her name?
WILLIAM
Her name is Claire, and yes she is
pretty.
JIMMY
That must mean she’s hideous, if
we’re going by your standards.
William carries the chicken plate across the kitchen and sets
the glass down on the stove beside the mashed potatoes which
have just finished cooking. He opens the lid, looks inside
and is satisfied with the taste. He then replaces the lid,
with the handle of the spoon sticking out on the side.
JIMMY (CONT’D)
Is she tall?
WILLIAM
Yes. A little taller than me. But,
she was in heels when I was
standing next to her.
JIMMY
Hmm…mmm…ugh.
WILLIAM
If you’re going to stand around in
the kitchen making odd noises, you
could at least give me a hand.
JIMMY
No. I think I’ll go change, just in
case this Claire creature is in
fact good looking.
Jimmy walks out of the kitchen but continues talking as he
makes his way down the hall.
JIMMY (CONT’D)
Then again, she couldn’t possibly
be anywhere near attractive if she
said yes to a date with you.
William chuffs back at Jimmy and continues with his task.
William goes over to the corn cobs and turns the ends with
metal tongs, as he stirs the pot of creamy mushroom soup
which is cooking beside it on the back-burners.
JIMMY (CONT’D)
12.
EXT. WILLIAM’S FRONT DOOR – EVENING
SOUND: Door bell
William comes to the door straightening the front of his
buttoned up shirt, and opens the door.
CLAIRE
Hi!
WILLIAM
(Jokingly)
Hi! How are you. Long time no see.
CLAIRE
(Jokingly)
Yeah. Yes, it’s been a while. A
whole 13 hours. Seems like forever
though, doesn’t it?
William lets Claire inside. She is wearing a long coat, which
at first makes it impossible to see her dress beneath.
William helps her remove her coat, and hangs it on a coat
hanger by the door.
WILLIAM
You changed.
CLAIRE
You didn’t think I would wear the
same dress I wore to work, to my
birthday dinner did you?
WILLIAM
I liked the dress you were wearing,
but, this all yellow one looks very
nice too.
William looks Claire over as she does a little spin for him,
while he does his best to keep himself from getting turned
on. William repeats his nervous habit and smooths his hair
back with his right hand, pulling a little at the longer bits
near the end.
CLAIRE
Where should I…?
WILLIAM
Oh sit? Yes. I was thinking that we
could sit out on the patio in the
back. The weather is so nice
outside, and I have a garden which
I think you’ll enjoy.
13.
CLAIRE
That sounds great. Lead the way.
William walks Claire to the back of the house, glancing over
at Jimmy on the way. Jimmy is in William’s bedroom, adjusting
his shirt in a mirror. Claire doesn’t notice Jimmy.
EXT. WILLIAM’S GARDEN – EVENING
CLAIRE
You have a lovely garden.
WILLIAM
Thanks. I planted them all myself.
I only used the ones I like, which
are basically the ones that take
little effort to plant and grow.
CLAIRE
It’s nice.
WILLIAM
Why don’t you have a seat here. I’m
going to check on dinner.
William motions Claire to sit anywhere on the patio as he
goes back into the house.
INT. WILLIAM’S KITCHEN – EVENING
JIMMY
What are you doing?
WILLIAM
Why?
JIMMY
You forgot to ask her what she
wants to drink.
WILLIAM
How did you know…? You’re right.
I’ll be right back. Don’t leave the
kitchen!
William rushes out to the garden while Jimmy comes over to
the pot of potatoes and breathes in the soothing aromas which
are floating out the sides of the lid. William comes back
into the kitchen.
14.
WILLIAM (CONT’D)
Wine. She wants wine. Do I even
have wine.
JIMMY
There is that bottle I opened last
night. It’s in the fridge.
WILLIAM
Since when do you like wine?
William walks over to the fridge, removes the bottle and
begins pouring a glass for Claire.
JIMMY
I’m allowed to have a glass every
once in a while. Besides, last
night I only took a sip. I prefer
red to white anyway.
WILLIAM
You prefer red everything.
JIMMY
You know you’re right. Red has
always been my favorite color,
hence the red shirt.
WILLIAM
Ugh…
JIMMY
What? Red is the color of anger and
passion.
Jimmy acts out in a dramatic fashion his next lines.
JIMMY (CONT’D)
(Acting)
How can you go about living if you
don’t have anger and passion? It’s
what drives the soul!
WILLIAM
Okay. I got it. Can we talk about
this later?
JIMMY
Did she bring anyone?
WILLIAM
Like who?
15.
JIMMY
Like an alter-ego, other
personality from the past sort of
thing. Like me.
WILLIAM
I don’t think so. She didn’t walk
in with anyone else.
JIMMY
(Laughing)
Well. The night’s still young.
Maybe she’ll show up later.
Jimmy walks out of the kitchen and down the hall.
WILLIAM
Just stay out of the garden!
JIMMY
Okay, alright. I got it.
SOUND: Doorbell rings
EXT. WILLIAM’S FRONT DOOR – EVENING
WILLIAM
Who could that be?
William walks over to the front door, and opens it.
NATALIE
Hi!
WILLIAM
Hello…
NATALIE
Sorry I’m late. Claire told me I
couldn’t come. But I don’t really
listen to her. And besides, I never
miss out on a party.
Natalie pushes her way into the house. William closes the
door behind her. William takes her coat, realizing who she
is.
WILLIAM
Nice, red dress.
NATALIE
Thanks. It’s new. Where should
I…?
16.
WILLIAM
Sit? Let me show you to the
library. Well, the room with a lot
of books in it.
William shows her to the room closest to the front door. He
closes the door behind her, leaning his back against the door
once it’s closed, keeping his cool.
INT. WILLIAM’S HALLWAY – EVENING
SOUND: Metal hitting the floor
WILLIAM
(Yelling)
What was that?
JIMMY
(Yelling)
Nothing you should be concerned
about. Unless it would bother you
that there’s water all over the
floor.
William opens the door slightly and peers in at Natalie who
has already become interested in a book on the shelf. Natalie
begins to look it over. William quietly closes the door
again, and makes his way to the kitchen.
INT. WILLIAM’S KITCHEN – EVENING
WILLIAM
What did you just do?
JIMMY
Nothing. I mean. It was an
accident.
Jimmy smiles at William hoping he will forgive.
JIMMY (CONT’D)
Don’t worry. I caught the corn
before it fell on the ground. It’s
in that bowel over there.
Jimmy points off to the side.
WILLIAM
Ugh!
JIMMY
What’s wrong?
17.
William begins to wipe up the water with a paper towel, but
the water is still hot. He gives up, leaving piles of paper
towels on the floor, to do the work themselves.
WILLIAM
Okay. So there’s another woman in
the house. She said she knows
Claire, and, I think I know how.
Since Claire told her not to come,
I’m, going to have to tell her
she’s here.
William tries to walk out of the kitchen, carrying the glass
of wine.
JIMMY
No, no, no, no, wait! Did you just
say there is another woman in the
house? And, Claire told her not to
come? What’s her name? What does
she look like?
WILLIAM
Hold on Casanova, you’re not going
to talk to her. You don’t exist.
JIMMY
Says the man who hasn’t had a date
in a year.
WILLIAM
Shut up.
JIMMY
You go take that glass to Claire,
and I’ll watch the food.
William sneers at Jimmy, thinking that he will mess up
something else.
JIMMY (CONT’D)
Don’t worry. I won’t touch
anything. I promise.
Jimmy raises his hands in the air.
WILLIAM
I’ll be right back. When I come
back, I’ll figure out what to do
with Natalie.
JIMMY
(Acting)
Her names Natalie?
18.
I’ve always wanted to date someone
named Natalie.
William steps back into the kitchen momentarily, wanting to
air choke Jimmy when he realizes he’ll spill the wine, so he
turns around and continues on his way.
WILLIAM
Stay in the kitchen!
William walks out of the kitchen pointing at Jimmy, as if he
can use the Force to stop him from moving.
EXT. WILLIAM’S GARDEN – EVENING
WILLIAM
Here’s your wine. I, I hope you’re
enjoying the ambiance.
CLAIRE
Yes. Very much. Thank You.
William sits down beside her, on the patio couch.
CLAIRE (CONT’D)
Just look at the moon up there.
WILLIAM
It looks like the moon is really
close.
CLAIRE
Isn’t that called something?
WILLIAM
I think it’s a…
CLAIRE
…a hunter’s moon. Yes. It’s a
hunter’s moon. You know they say
that strange things tend to happen
when there is a full moon that’s
that big.
WILLIAM
That’s right. You’re right. It’s
been awhile since I’ve been in
school. But I do remember learning
that. You must have a good memory.
CLAIRE
(Smiling)
You could say that.
JIMMY (CONT’D)
19.
WILLIAM
Does that mean that something
strange is going to happen tonight?
CLAIRE
Well, it doesn’t have to be strange
necessarily. It could just be
something out of the ordinary…
(Short Pause)
…or something you were…hoping
for.
Claire takes a sip of her wine. William intently watches her
lips. He quickly becomes enthralled and distracted.
CLAIRE (CONT’D)
Is dinner almost ready?
William is knocked out of his trance.
WILLIAM
Just about. Let me go check on
that.
William gets up, stops as wants to say something to Claire.
William goes back to the kitchen.
INT. WILLIAM’S KITCHEN – EVENING
WILLIAM
Jimmy?
SOUND: Light chatter
William walks over to the “library.”
SOUND: Heavy chatter
William peers into the room with all the books in it.
NATALIE
(Laughing)
Oh Jimmy! You are so…funny!
JIMMY
Thank you, I try. I really do.
Making people laugh has always been
my thing, especially in high
school.
Natalie continues to laugh. William rolls his eyes, and
whispers to Jimmy.
20.
WILLIAM
(Whispering)
Jimmy! Come, here!
JIMMY
I’ll be right back, gorgeous.
Jimmy leans into Natalie and taps her on the nose with his
finger, before he walks away. Natalie goes back to the book
in her hand. Laughter stops.
INT. WILLIAM’S HALLWAY – EVENING
WILLIAM
What are you doing? I told you not
to talk to her.
William realizes something strange. His face shows this
realization.
WILLIAM (CONT’D)
Wait. She can see you? But how can
she see you if your just a…oh. So
she is who I thought she was.
JIMMY
What?
WILLIAM
She’s who Claire used to be. She’s
an alter ego of Claire. Funny. She
doesn’t look at all like Claire.
JIMMY
So I was right!
William avoids looking Jimmy in the face.
WILLIAM
Yeah. You were, for once.
Congratulations.
JIMMY
So did you tell her. You know you
don’t have to tell her.
WILLIAM
Tell her what? Oh that Natalie is
here? I was thinking about it but,
then again, it might make her
leave. Hmm. But…
21.
JIMMY
It’s fine. I’ll take care of
Natalie, and you can take care of
Claire. We’ll just stay on opposite
sides of the house. That way we
won’t accidently run into each
other.
WILLIAM
I would say no, but I don’t think
we really have any other choice.
Natalie calls from the “library.”
NATALIE
Jimmy. I found this great book in
here that I think you’ll like.
JIMMY
(Yelling)
I’ll be right there.
William turns to look at the back door which leads to the
patio. Jimmy looks at William. William looks back at him.
WILLIAM
Do you think that you can keep her
on this side of the house. Really?
But, what about later on? I mean,
what if Claire wants to you know
later on?
JIMMY
(Laughing)
With you? I don’t think so.
WILLIAM
Okay here’s the deal. She can stay
until dinner is over. You guys can
eat in the room your in but we’re
going to eat at the dinner table.
You have to get her out after that,
just in case Claire wants to…
(Acting)
You know…
JIMMY
Okay Casanova. I got it. But don’t
expect her to just sleep with you
on the first date.
(Acting)
You’re not me after all.
22.
WILLIAM
Yeah. Okay so it’s settled?
JIMMY
Yeah.
Jimmy leans in at the door where Natalie is waiting. William
begins to walk back to the kitchen.
SOUND: Door bell.
Jimmy and William turn to look at each other. They appear
confused.
JIMMY (CONT’D)
I’ll get back to Natalie. You get
the door.
WILLIAM
Good idea.
William walks in the opposite direction, toward the front
door, and opens it.
EXT. WILLIAM’S FRONT DOOR – EVENING
JULIA
Hello.
WILLIAM
Hi…
JULIA
You’re William, right?
Julia holds out her hand so that William might engage in the
shaking of hands.
JULIA (CONT’D)
I’ve heard a lot about you from
Claire.
WILLIAM
You have?
JULIA
Yes. In fact she spoke quite fondly
of you.
WILLIAM
Really?
23.
William begins to day dream of what Claire could possibly
have said.
JULIA
I don’t want to hold you up, on
your date or anything. It’s. It’s
just that I was supposed to watch
something for her, well someone,
and…they kind of got away from
me. It’s nothing to worry about
really. I just thought I should
tell her. She accidently left her
phone at home.
Julia removes Claire’s cell phone from her coat pocket and
shows it to William. William appears worried.
WILLIAM
Did you say your name was Julia?
JULIA
Yes. Why?
Julia places the phone back in her pocket.
WILLIAM
Oh no reason. Claire’s told me a
little about you too.
JULIA
All good things, I hope.
WILLIAM
Of course. All good things.
William and Julia stand at the door, for a moment, not
knowing what to say.
JULIA
Well I didn’t want to interrupt
your guys date or anything. And, I
didn’t want to worry her, but…
Julia raises her hand to her face, leaning into her palm.
JULIA (CONT’D)
You know what never mind. Don’t
tell her I told you this but Claire
hasn’t had a date in while and if I
tell her what happened now, she
might get mad at me for ruining
things with you, so…
24.
William listens intently, trying to figure out what she
means.
JULIA (CONT’D)
I think it would be better if I
just left.
Julia begins to walk away. Then she stops and comes back to
the door.
JULIA (CONT’D)
Should I? I think I should, leave.
Yes. That would be the right thing
to do in this situation. I think.
William hesitates, reacting to her as she begins pacing back
and forth along the walk way, undecided. William begins to
get dizzy watching her.
WILLIAM
You know what?
Julia rushes back to the door.
JULIA
Yes.
WILLIAM
Why don’t you come in for a minute,
and I could tell Claire for you, if
you like. I mean, whatever it is
that you want her to know. It seems
like it’s important. That way, if
she does get mad, maybe she’ll take
it out on me instead?
William shrugs his shoulders, hoping that he said the right
thing.
JULIA
That’s very nice of you. You know I
think you’re right. It might sound
better, or I mean she might take it
better coming from you. I think
that’s a great idea.
INT. WILLIAM’S HALLWAY – EVENING
Julia pushes her way inside, before William can offer.
William helps Julia with her coat, revealing her dress
beneath.
SOUND: Door closing
25.
WILLIAM
Nice, blue dress.
JULIA
Oh this old thing? Thanks. Where
should I…?
WILLIAM
Sit? Let me show you to the music
room. Well, the room with a lot of
music in it. You can wait there,
while I go tell Claire for you.
William leads Julia to the second door at the right of the
hallway, and shows her inside.
JULIA
Wow. You have quite a collection.
Julia immediately goes to the shelf that’s holding stacks of
CD’s.
WILLIAM
I think they’re some of the best.
William starts to get caught up in conversation when he
realize’s Claire must be wondering where he is.
WILLIAM (CONT’D)
So. What was it that you wanted me
to tell Claire, for you?
JULIA
(Motioning)
Oh. You know what. Maybe it can
wait for a minute or two. Go ahead
and get back to her. I would like
to listen to a couple of these
tracks first if you don’t mind.
Julia noticed a CD player not far off from where she’s
standing, and puts in a CD.
WILLIAM
Sure. Ill be back in a little
while, to uh…check on you.
JULIA
(Motioning)
No problem. Take your time.
William walks out of the room, closing the door behind.
William takes a deep breath, and remembers dinner.
26.
WILLIAM
The food!
INT. WILLIAM’S KITCHEN – EVENING
JIMMY
Hey man. How’s Claire doing? Is she
soaking in all the William charm I
taught you so well?
WILLIAM
Jimmy! What are you doing in here?
I thought that you were going to
stay with Natalie.
JIMMY
I am. I just got a little hungry,
so I came in the kitchen to get
something to eat.
WILLIAM
(Relieved)
Oh. Okay.
William intently watches as Jimmy ravages a cob of corn.
WILLIAM (CONT’D)
Aren’t you going to make Natalie a
plate?
JIMMY
No way. Not right now. I didn’t
want to eat in front of her. You
know how sloppy I am at eating. I
could send her running for the
hills.
WILLIAM
(Strong)
Better to starve her, then?
(Whispering)
Maybe you should eat in front of
her.
JIMMY
What did you say?
WILLIAM
Nothing.
JIMMY
Why do you look so worried? Is
something wrong?
27.
WILLIAM
No. Maybe. Yes.
William walks over to the stove, a turns off all the burners
in order to let the food cool. William goes to the chicken
and rips off a piece to taste.
WILLIAM (CONT’D)
The chicken’s not cooked all the
way. Did you turn the oven off
again before the food is finished?
JIMMY
No. Maybe. Yes.
(Hesitantly)
It was an accident?
WILLIAM
Ugh!
William rushes over to the oven and puts the chicken back in
for another 20 minutes.
JIMMY
Sorry.
WILLIAM
Just get back to Natalie, and don’t
be a jerk. Bring her a plate of
food. I want the two of you to stay
in that room. Got it?
JIMMY
Got it.
William walks out of the kitchen to the hallway when he
remembers he need something and comes back.
WILLIAM
I forgot my drink.
Jimmy cleans off his face and walks out of the kitchen,
without a plate for Natalie. William walks over to the fridge
and opens the door.
WILLIAM (CONT’D)
Lets see I have: wine, vodka, beer,
and apple cider chilled. I’ll have
some apple cider. I just can’t
handle a real drink right now.
William grabs the bottle and fills himself a wine glass full,
wit ice. William steps out of the kitchen, and into the
hallway.
28.
INT. WILLIAM’S HALLWAY – EVENING
JULIA
Hi, again.
WILLIAM
Hello Julia. Can I get you
something?
William looks over to the garden door for a minutes, knowing
that he has kept Claire waiting for far too long.
JULIA
Yes. I was going to ask you for a
drink. Do you have any…?
WILLIAM
Yes. What ever you like. Help
yourself. The drinks are in the
fridge, and the glasses are above
dishwasher to the right. I would
get one for you myself, but I
really have t get back to Claire.
JULIA
Thanks. I’ll just, help myself,
then.
Julia walks past William into the kitchen. William sighs
heavily, making his way to the back door.
EXT. WILLIAM’S GARDEN – EVENING
WILLIAM
So sorry to keep you waiting.
CLAIRE
(Jokingly)
I wasn’t sure that you were ever
coming back.
William takes a seat beside Claire on the patio couch.
WILLIAM
(Laughing)
Sorry. The chicken isn’t quite
done, and I wouldn’t want you
getting salmonella.
(Pause)
That would be a nasty visit to the
E.R.
(Whispering)
And diarrhea probably. Yuck!
29.
William realizes, once again, that he has managed to say the
wrong thing. William turns to the side to momentarily scold
himself, between sips of his drink.
CLAIRE
What was that?
WILLIAM
Oh nothing. Is the wine okay?
CLAIRE
Yes. I like it very much. I’ve
always preferred white wine to red.
(Pause)
Red is just too strong for me.
WILLIAM
I agree. I mean, I’m not saying
that it’s too strong for you too.
Not that I’m trying to say what you
should and shouldn’t drink, I just
agree with you, about…what you
were saying. I like white too.
Claire laughs for a moment, realizing how nervous William is.
CLAIRE
It’s okay William. You can relax.
I’m not going to bite. I’m not that
sort of person.
WILLIAM
I know. That’s why I like you.
CLAIRE
You do?
WILLIAM
Yes. I like you a lot actually.
CLAIRE
Don’t tell me you,ve…
WILLIAM
Yes. I have liked you for the past
6 years. I hope that doesn’t make
me seem like stalker or anything?
CLAIRE
I hate it when that happens!
WILLIAM
You hate…me…?
30.
CLAIRE
No. It’s not you that I hate you. I
hate that when ever a guy likes me
he doesn’t just come right out and
say so.
William relaxes his shoulders in relief.
CLAIRE (CONT’D)
I hate when a guy who’s shy, like
you, no offense, doesn’t just say
that he likes me. It’s not like
woman can read a man’s mind you
know.
WILLIAM
None taken, and I know what you
mean, I do. Most of the time we
don’t even know what we’re
thinking.
CLAIRE
It’s about rejection isn’t it.
WILLIAM
Yup. Pretty much. It’s our
kryptonite.
CLAIRE
Well. I’m glad you told me because
I like you too.
Claire takes a sip of her wine.
CLAIRE (CONT’D)
Can I ask you something William?
WILLIAM
Of course. Anything.
CLAIRE
When did you first notice me, in
the office?
WILLIAM
Well it was I think your fifth
week. I had known of you but hadn’t
seen you yet. I think it was the
first time that you wore that
Mondrain dress. You were sort of
running around, doing this and
that, for the boss.
31.
CLAIRE
I think I remember what you’re
talking about.
WILLIAM
You probably didn’t see anyone
around you, let alone me, when we
ran into each other in the doorway
of the copy room, just like we did
today. I said excuse me, but you
were too busy to notice me.
CLAIRE
Awe. I’m so sorry. Now I feel
really bad.
Claire scoots herself closer to William. They both hold their
wine glasses in opposite hands as they come close enough to
kiss.
WILLIAM
It’s okay. Our boss is crazy. But
he does a great job with keeping
that company above ground, and he
does pay his employees well.
William takes another sip without realizing what’s about to
happen.
CLAIRE
Still. I should have said something
to you.
Claire places her drink on a short table beside her, and
leans into William. William suddenly realizes, and places his
drink beside hers.
WILLIAM
Claire I…
CLAIRE
Shh. Don’t say anything.
William nervously moves in closer, ready for the kiss. Claire
closes her eyes as William gently places his hand behind her
neck. William closes his eyes. Their lips barely touch.
SOUND: Blender
Claire breaks her concentration.
CLAIRE (CONT’D)
What was that?
32.
William is confused, still in a daze from the soft touch of
her lips. William’s eyes are still closed.
WILLIAM
What? What was what?
SOUND: Blender
CLAIRE
That.
William opens his eyes. This time William hears it too,
breaking his concentration, as thoughts quickly rush through
his head.
WILLIAM
I’ll…
William turns to Claire, wanting to continue the kiss.
William leans in, as if he were about to continue when the
noise returns.
SOUND: Blender
WILLIAM (CONT’D)
I should go…check that. But! But
I’ll be right back, don’t move. And
don’t worry. I’m sure it’s just…
(Pause)
…wild animals.
William walks back into the house, closing the door behind
him. Claire is left sitting alone, as she picks up her drink
and takes a sip.
CLAIRE
Wild animals?
INT. WILLIAM’S KITCHEN – EVENING
WILLIAM
What are you doing!
JULIA
You didn’t have anything that I
wanted to drink in the fridge so I
thought that I would make myself a
smoothie. It’s healthier than
alcohol or soda.
(Pause)
You know you should really watch
your calorie intake.
33.
William looks down at his fit body.
WILLIAM
What are you talking abou…
(Pause)
Okay…I came in here because I
heard some strange noise. I thought
that maybe something broke. Or that
maybe Jimmy had…
JULIA
No. Nothings broken. Who’s Jimmy?
WILLIAM
What?
JULIA
I said who’s Jimmy?
WILLIAM
Jimmy, who Jimmy? I don’t know a
Jimmy.
JULIA
I think you do. You just mentioned
him.
WILLIAM
Okay just forget what I said. Can
you please tell me what you want me
to tell Claire for you. I’m
thinking that it would be better if
we were left alone.
JULIA
Oh so you want me to leave now?
(Crying)
I understand. First you’re nice to
me, and now you just want me to
leave. You’re a real nice guy.
WILLIAM
No. That’s not what I meant. It’s
just that…
JULIA
It’s just that what? That you’d
rather be on a date with Claire
than with me? I’m not pretty enough
for you, is that it?
Julia finishes making the smoothie and pours the contents
into a tall 8 ounce glass. Julia leaves the blender messy.
34.
WILLIAM
No. What I’m trying to say is
that…
Julia takes her drink and steps closer to William. William
takes a step back in order to maintain personal space.
JULIA
I know you. I know your type of
guy, saying one thing and then
doing another. The fact that I
changed my name for you doesn’t
matter either, does it!
William is speechless. He takes a step toward her, after she
takes a step back, wanting to console her but can’t bring
himself to get close enough to do so.
WILLIAM
I’m sorry, I…
William doesn’t know what else to say and is slightly
perplexed.
JULIA
(Yelling)
You better be!
INT. WILLIAM’S HALLWAY – EVENING
William watches Julia walk away. She passes him in the
doorway and goes back into the music room. Julia slams the
door behind her.
SOUND: Smooth Jazz plays
Jimmy comes out of the book room, and into the hallway.
JIMMY
Uh. What just happened? Did you
make Claire mad or something?
WILLIAM
No! I made Julia mad!
William stomps into the kitchen. Jimmy eagerly follows.
INT. WILLIAM’S KITCHEN – EVENING
JIMMY
Julia? Who’s Julia?
35.
WILLIAM
Claire’s other alter-ego.
William checks on the chicken. It’s almost done. William goes
over to the potatoes, and stirs them.
JIMMY
What? Another alter-ego? So I was
right once again?
Jimmy gets exceedingly excited; it’s clear by the look on his
face.
WILLIAM
Yes there is another one. I’m
trying to remember what she said.
Jimmy jumps up and down like a girl for a moment, then goes
back to his cool.
WILLIAM (CONT’D)
I remember the thing about changing
her name, and the emotions, that’s
right. Okay, that was the time in
her life that she was sad. That
would explain the crying.
Jimmy is only half listening to what William is saying when
he cuts in.
JIMMY
What does she look like? Is she
hot? Wait. Is she hotter than
Natalie. You know what? I’ll be the
judge.
Jimmy walks out of the kitchen and into the hallway.
JIMMY (CONT’D)
(Yelling)
Which room is she in?
William remains distracted by the food.
WILLIAM
She’s in the music room.
William is only half listening to Jimmy’s question to realize
that Jimmy plans on talking to Julia. The sound of a door
opening snaps William out of his thoughts.
WILLIAM (CONT’D)
Wait! What are you doing? Don’t go
in…
36.
William runs out into the hallway cutting off Jimmy before he
can open the door.
INT. WILLIAM’S HALLWAY – EVENING
WILLIAM
You can’t go in there.
JIMMY
Why not? Can’t I just see what she
looks like?
WILLIAM
No!
JIMMY
You know today’s a big day for you
William, scoring three women at
once, that’s a bit beyond my
teachings.
WILLIAM
Trust me. You don’t want to go in
there. She’s emotionally unstable.
JIMMY
I’m sure I can tame her wild beast,
just let me talk to her.
Jimmy tries to push his way past William. William stops his
attempt.
WILLIAM
No!
Jimmy pushes the door ajar just enough to look in at Julia.
Julia is standing on the opposite side of the room, dancing
softly to a song she’s listening to.
JIMMY
Oh my god! She is hotter than
Natalie!
WILLIAM
I don’t think that’s a very nice
thing to say with Natalie in the
next room.
JIMMY
Oh don’t worry about her. She’s
asleep.
37.
WILLIAM
What?
JIMMY
Yeah I started talking to her about
the philosophies of Shakespeare and
she fell right to sleep. You know
how boring that guy can be.
Jimmy tries again to push his way past.
WILLIAM
There’s no such thing as the
philosophies of Shakespeare. He
writes plays. The man writes Plays!
JIMMY
Yeah yeah. Philosophies, plays,
same difference.
Jimmy tries to push past again.
WILLIAM
I’m surprised you can even
pronounce philosophies.
JIMMY
Don’t you have to get back to
Claire?
WILLIAM
Oh my gosh, Claire!
William bolts off of the door and runs into the kitchen.
Jimmy peers into the room.
JIMMY
(Whispers)
Hmm…What if William’s right? A
woman that hot must be carrying a
lot of baggage.
Jimmy closes the door and goes back to the “library.”
INT. WILLIAM’S KITCHEN – EVENING
William looks over each food item, finding that it’s ready.
WILLIAM
Now I just need two plates, and two
place settings for the table.
William moves to the dinning room.
38.
INT. WILLIAM’S DINING ROOM – EVENING
William walks around the table undecided as to where he
should put Claire’s setting.
WILLIAM
I could put her on the opposite
side, at the head of the table. But
then what if she decides to kiss me
again?
(Pause)
What am I thinking? She’s not going
to try and kiss me when her mouth
is full of food.
(Pause)
Then again, she might try and play
footsie with me. Come on William
footsie? When the last time that
term was used.
William sets himself at the head of the table with Claire to
his left.
WILLIAM (CONT’D)
There now everything is…
CLAIRE
William?
WILLIAM
Claire. Everything is ready now. I
was actually just about to go and
get you.
CLAIRE
I would have waited, but, you seem
to want to spend more time inside
then out in the garden, where you
put me.
WILLIAM
I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to…let
me start over. It’s been a little
crazy tonight. Believe me. You
don’t want to know. And I was just
trying to make everything perfect
for you. I’m still kinda nervous.
CLAIRE
That’s okay. I understand. So where
should I sit? I brought your dink
in, too.
39.
WILLIAM
Thanks. I’ll just take that and set
it down at my spot, and you can
have a seat right here.
William pulls out the chair where he wants Claire to have a
seat. Claire smiles. William smiles back. The two have a
moment, then it’s broken.
SOUND: Slammed door
JULIA
There you are William. You know I
wasn’t done talki…
Julia see’s the extravagant set up and assumes it’s all for
her.
JULIA (CONT’D)
This is really nice. I accept
you’re apology.
William looks to Claire. Claire appears confused at first.
Julia doesn’t notice Claire for a moment. Julia smiles at
William as she wipes away her tears. Julia begins to move to
the other side of the table when she notices Claire. Julia
stops.
CLAIRE
What are you doing here, Julia?
Julia becomes afraid.
JULIA
I. I…uh…
CLAIRE
You uh, what? Why are you here?
William did you know about this?
What apology is she talking about?
William looks to Julia not knowing what to say. William looks
back to Claire, trying to give an honest smile.
WILLIAM
Well I…
JULIA
I came over because I sort a, lost
the package you told me to keep an
eye on.
40.
CLAIRE
You lost Natalie! Are you serious?
Again?
JULIA
She just kinda slipped away from me
this time. I thought she was
asleep, so I took a nap and when I
woke up she was gone. I knew where
she wanted to go, so, I came here.
CLAIRE
Are you telling me that Natalie’s
here too?
Claire becomes upset but not enraged.
SOUND: Fighting in the hallway
INT. WILLIAM’S HALLWAY – EVENING
NATALIE
So you just left me?
SOUND: Door slams
JIMMY
I’m sorry I didn’t mean to. You
just looked so peaceful lying
there, I didn’t want to disturb
you.
NATALIE
Oh yeah! That’s real romantic after
you were telling me how much you
were like Romeo and I was your
Juliet. Huh! I knew I shouldn’t
have believed you.
INT. WILLIAM’S DINING ROOM – EVENING
CLAIRE
(Yelling)
Natalie?
Natalie walks into the dinning room, followed by Jimmy.
CLAIRE (CONT’D)
What are you doing here Natalie? I
specifically told you not to come.
41.
NATALIE
Yeah well, a lot of good that did,
right?
CLAIRE
I tell you to stay home for a
reason. You can’t just be out
amongst real people! They can’t see
you. They’d freak out!
NATALIE
How would they freak out if they
can’t see me?
William looks to Jimmy in agreement. Jimmy looks around as if
he did nothing. The room is quiet for a moment.
NATALIE (CONT’D)
You can’t keep us cooped up in that
apartment all day, day in and day
out. We have to have freedom, or
else we’ll find a way to get out on
our own.
Jimmy looks to William nodding in agreement.
WILLIAM
What? Don’t look at me!
Julia looks to Claire.
JULIA
She’s right you know.
CLAIRE
And you! I told you to watch her!
JULIA
(Crying)
Well it’s too late now.
CLAIRE
Oh come on. Not the crying again.
JULIA
(Crying)
I’m always crying. You should know
that by now.
CLAIRE
I’m really sorry William. I didn’t
expect them to follow me here.
(Pause)
42.
Wait, have you been keeping the two
of them here without telling me?
Jimmy looks to William.
JIMMY
You’re in trouble now.
WILLIAM
(Contrite)
I’m sorry. They came to the door
and I couldn’t turn them away. I
didn’t think that it would be a
problem. I just thought that they
could stay for…a while?
JIMMY
I’m Jimmy by the way.
Jimmy moves toward Claire to offer his hand. Jimmy notices
how good looking she is.
CLAIRE
Nice to meet you.
JIMMY
Looks like you chose the hottest
one.
Natalie slaps Jimmy across the face, knowing what he means by
his comment.
JIMMY (CONT’D)
What?
WILLIAM
I’ve already met two of yours, and
this one’s is mine….
(Hesitantly)
…I’m sorry to say.
CLAIRE
(Hesitantly)
Nice…to meet…you.
JIMMY
(Acting)
En chante, mademoiselle.
Jimmy takes up Claire’s hand to his lips and kisses it
gently. Claire remembers this feeling. It’s the same feeling
as when William’s lips slightly touched hers, not that long
ago. Claire smiles politely, but takes her hand away.
CLAIRE (CONT’D)
43.
CLAIRE
Okay this is getting really weird.
WILLIAM
(Taking a stand)
I agree. Would you care to take a
seat?
William pulls the chair out for Claire, motioning her to take
a seat.
JULIA
Why thank you. Don’t mind if I do.
Julia moves towards the seat, but Natalie stops her.
NATALIE
What are you doing? That dinner
plate is clearly for me. I was here
first.
CLAIRE
Actually I was here first.
JULIA
What about me!
Claire, Natalie, and Julia try to push their way past each
other, but none of them can get through.
WILLIAM
Okay stop! I set the table for two.
One dinner plate is for myself, and
the other is for Claire. I invited
Claire over for dinner.
JULIA
(Crying)
So, you really do like her better
than me?
CLAIRE
What is she talking about, William?
Claire makes her way past the other two women. Claire stands
beside William. Natalie and Julia begin to bicker back and
forth.
WILLIAM
Claire. I’m really sorry that this
happened. You were right. I should
not have let them in, in the first
place.
44.
CLAIRE
Can you please explain to me what
Julia is talking about?
WILLIAM
Remember that noise you heard
earlier? That was the blender. I
came into the kitchen and found
Julia helping herself to a
smoothie, and it was at that point
I thought she should leave.
CLAIRE
Then she got all upset and said
that you didn’t even appreciate her
changing her name for you?
WILLIAM
Yeah…how did you?
CLAIRE
She says that all the time. I’m
sorry too. I should have told you
about them. I mean I did tell you
about them but, I didn’t really
tell you about them.
Claire and William laugh to each other.
JIMMY
Girls, girls, there’s no need to
fight. I can share.
Jimmy looks to Natalie and Julia with open arms. Natalie
slaps Jimmy again. Jimmy is shocked.
NATALIE
We’re women not girls you scum-bag!
JIMMY
There’s no need for violence
really. We can still have a great
night together. Just the three of
us.
NATALIE
Forget it; I’m leaving!
JULIA
(Crying)
Me too!
45.
Julia and Natalie stomp out of the dinning room. Jimmy
follows the women into the hallway. Fighting is heard all the
way to the front door.
SOUND: Door slams
Silence.
William and Claire walk over to the hallway and peer inside.
The hallway is bare, and the women’s coats are gone, along
with the women, and Jimmy.
Claire looks at William. William looks at Claire. They both
laugh a little.
FADE TO:
INT. WILLIAM’S BEDROOM – EVENING
Claire and William are lying, close enough to kiss, in
William’s bed, fully clothed, on top of the blankets, facing
each other, with the light of the full moon shining in from
the open widow above.
CLAIRE
You know they say that strange
things tend to happen when there is
a full moon that’s that big!
William brings his left hand to Claire’s forehead and lets
his fingers fall down the side of her cheek, settling his
hand behind her ear, pulling her close.
WILLIAM
Does that mean that something
strange is going to happen tonight?
CLAIRE
Well, it doesn’t have to be strange
necessarily. It could just be
something out of the ordinary…
(Short Pause)
…or something you were…hoping
for.
Claire leans into william and kisses him, with a strong
sensuous kiss. William kisses her back.
FADE OUT.
